Quito, officially San Francisco de Quito, is the political capital of the Republic of Ecuador and the oldest in South America.
It is located over the Guayllabamba basin, on the western slopes of the active Pichincha stratovolcano, in the eastern part of the Andes, with an average altitude of 2,700 meters above sea level.
Quito is the first city declared as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, on September 8, 1978.
